New record set in $2 Jackpot Lottery this morning, jackpot prize stands at $16.21 million
A new record of $16.21 million was set in the $2 Lottery Jackpot Lottery this morning following draw 9362.
NSW Lotteries estimates that close to a million players have purchased tickets in the current jackpot run, which began in January this year.
The previous record for the $2 Jackpot Lottery was $16.025 million, achieved on 5 September 2008, when a pensioner from the Illawarra region scored the jackpot prize.
The origins of the $2 and $5 Jackpot Lotteries go back to the early 1930s, as these games are essentially the same as the first lottery draw conducted on 20 August 1931 by the then NSW State Lottery Office.
This heritage and a program of continuous game improvement have ensured the popularity of the $2 and $5 Jackpot Lotteries over the years.
“The $2 Jackpot Lottery is one of the favourite lottery games in NSW. The history of the game holds sentimental vale for NSW residents as lotteries have helped fund landmark projects such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House,” NSW Lotteries Communications Manager John Vineburg said this morning.
“Each ticket number is unique, so any prize won does not have to be shared, and that includes the jackpot! This unique feature has helped the Jackpot Lotteries to compete with other games offering bigger prizes that may be shared among multiple winners,” Mr Vineburg added.
The jackpot will now to continue to climb by an additional $110,000 each draw until it is won. The next draw (9363) will be conducted on Tuesday 6 October The jackpot in the $2 Jackpot Lottery is won when the selected jackpot number has already won a cash prize in the same lottery.
