$2 Jackpot Lottery won at a record $16.32 million in Newcastle

The jackpot prize in the $2 Jackpot Lottery has been won at a record-breaking $16.32 million in draw 9364 this morning.

The jackpot run, which had lasted since 20 January, was finally ended when ticket number 219635, purchased at Bar Beach Newsagency in Newcastle, was selected to win the record prize.

The lucky ticket holder has asked to remain totally anonymous.

Krystyn Dawes from the family run newsagency said that everyone was excited to have sold the biggest prize ever in the Jackpot Lotteries.

“It’s great that it’s gone to someone we sold a ticket to. We’ve had some big wins on syndicates and Instant Scratchies but this is by far the biggest prize we’ve ever sold,” Ms Dawes said. “I expect that there will be a lot of interest around Newcastle when word gets out that someone has picked up more than $16 million.”

The record jackpot had only lasted over the Long Weekend since breaking the old record of $16.025 million on Friday when it went to $16.21 million.

The origins of the $2 and $5 Jackpot Lotteries go back to the early 1930s, as these games are essentially the same as the first lottery draw conducted on 20 August 1931 by the then NSW State Lottery Office.

This heritage and a program of continuous game improvement have ensured the popularity of the $2 and $5 Jackpot Lotteries over the years.

The jackpot in the $2 Jackpot Lottery is won when the selected jackpot number has already won a cash prize in the same lottery. Today’s winning ticket had won just $20 before being selected for the jackpot prize.

The jackpot reverted to the base amount of $500,000 for the following draw, 9365, this morning but was not won.

It now stands at $610,000 for draw 9366 tomorrow (Wednesday 7 October) and will increase by $110,000 for each successive $2 Jackpot Lottery draw until won again.
